Message from Aaron Peskin: North Beach Public Safety Meeting on October 1

From Supervisor Aaron Peskin:

Come meet SFPD Chief Bill Scott & discuss public safety issues with Central Station Captain Paul Yep

Over the last several weeks, my office has fielded an increasing number of phone calls and emails regarding violent and aggressive street behavior and crime.  I have personally witnessed this behavior throughout my District, from Fisherman’s Wharf to North Beach and Chinatown to lower Nob Hill. In the eighteen years that I have served on and off the Board of Supervisors, I have never seen such a surge in this level of disturbing behavior.

I am working closely with the San Francisco Police Department, and continue to support increased funding for everything from additional law enforcement to mental health crisis intervention teams. I realize that these issues are not unique to San Francisco, and that we are a part of a larger national crisis throughout urban America. But there are things that we can and must be doing now, and this Town Hall is our opportunity to impress upon our public safety officials that District 3 needs additional resources at every level. In addition to being the densest district in the City, it is also home to the center of our tourism and hospitality economy.

I invite you to join our North Beach Town Hall so that Chief Scott, Captain Yep and I can hear directly from you about what you are experiencing on the ground.

6:00 pm — 7:30 pm

Tel-Hi Neighborhood Center, 660 Lombard Street

* If you have mobility or language access needs, please email Sunny Angulo in Supervisor Peskin’s office in advance.

I continue my search for a supervised homeless resource center. Right now, our streets are a de-facto open-air homeless shelter. We can do better. I still intend to host another Solutions to Homelessness public forum, as a follow-up to last year’s well-attended meeting, which you can watch in its totality here.  Addressing the surge of homelessness in our corner of the City continues to be one of my top priorities. My office will be back in touch soon with confirmation of the next community meeting. I hope that you’ll join us and be a part of this ongoing conversation.

Finally, together with the help of SFPD Captain Yep and many community members, my office has helped improve public safety conditions on Broadway. After numerous disciplinary hearings on a problematic nightclub long associated with violent incidents, the Entertainment Commission voted last night to continue the imposition of conditions on Hue Nightclub’s operations.  The conditions that they imposed last year have been working and have reduced violent incidents on Broadway. Our collective advocacy and testimony at hearings has proven effective. Let’s keep it up!

Best,
Aaron

Future of SF Transportation Forum on September 29 Sponsored by CSFN and Save Muni

Save Muni and the Coalition for San Francisco Neighborhoods (CSFN) are sponsoring a Forum on the Future of Transportation in San Francisco on Saturday, September 29 from 10 AM to 12 PM at Koret Auditorium, San Francisco Main Library. The Forum will address increasing congestion on San Francisco’s streets and the deterioration of public transit. Muni carries roughly the same number of passengers in 2018 as it did a decade ago, despite increased city population and the economic boom. What can be done to make it easier to move around the city?

The Forum will feature transportation experts who will share their ideas for reducing congestion and improving public transit service:

  • Jonathan Hopkins, Executive Director of Commute Seattle, will describe how his city has been the only one in the nation to increase transit ridership since the recession
  • Jerry Cauthen, Transportation Consultant, past Senior Engineering Manager and Transportation Vice President, Parsons Brinckerhoff, will talk about ways to improve public transit service and ridership in San Francisco
  • Mollie Cohen D’Agostino from the Institute for Transportation Studies at the University of California at Davis will share results of her group’s study of transportation networking companies (Lyft and Uber) in San Francisco and other American cities
  • Bob Feinbaum, Chair of Save Muni, will describe the role for congestion pricing in San Francisco, aided by a video featuring Jonas Eliasson, head of transportation for Stockholm, which adopted congestion pricing more than a decade ago

Share your ideas! The Forum will include a moderated discussion of questions from the audience.
